What's The Most You've Spent On An Autograph?

What's The Most You've Spent On An Autograph?

By no means is this thread up here to brag on how much money you have! Not all collectors have the same financial freedom to spend on acquiring the best and largest autograph collection out there!

But just to see how far you are willing to go... what is the most you have spent (or willing to spend) on an autograph or autographed item?

When it comes to spending big money on an autograph (in my honest opinion)... it better be on a HOF or future first ballot HOF athlete. Or someone who is considered one of the best EVER at their position or in the game. I will never spend hundreds of dollars on current/unproven athletes.

I have had two expensive autograph purchases over the past year. These two I also considered my Holy Grails... so spending big bucks wasn't a tough decision. I just made sacrifices elsewhere!

The first being my Michael Jordan UDA signed jersey and the other being my Greg Maddux signed authentic jersey with three inscriptions.

The most ever spent for me is Muhammad Ali at the 2002 National. I think it was $500 for a glove. There's been a few expensive ones but thats what it is for playing the game.

I must agree on reserving the big money autographs for solid proven HOFers and not unproven current players. What if you had paid big dollars for Dwight Gooden or Darryl Strawberry during their "prime"? What a waste that would have been. Kind of like the waste their careers ended up being.

I also got Maddux on my 300W/3000K plate at the same Sun Times show your jersey was signed at. My inscription request of 355W 3771K was the cause of a debate on inscription costs. I presented the autograph ticket and one inscription ticket for my request. The promoters claimed that those 7 numbers and 2 letters in my inscription request actually constituted 2 separate inscriptions. Maddux exclaimed "It seems we have an issue here. What should we do?" I patiently waited silently until the promoters finally relented and told Greg to go ahead and sign the plate. I would contend that those are related numbers from a universally recognized exclusive club and constitute one single inscription (as on your jersey). I had never been asked for 2 inscription tickets from any of the others in that club before. I would also put forth that my request accounted for a total of 9 characters, less than the 10 characters in the inscription "Best wishes". I think there needs to be some uniformity or clearer pricing with respect to inscriptions.

I think my most expensive autograph though is also a member of the 300W/3000K club and is in the middle of the plate below Maddux. Roger Clemens was around $400 when he signed the plate in 2004.

I guess I had better save up for the next Sun Times Show. Pedro Martinez was announced as their first autograph guest. He is the last 3000K pitcher I need to complete the plate and will finish up the plate nicely by signing to the left of Bob Gibson.

When I was 14 back in 2005 I spent $149.00 to get a 2-Bar RK Packers Helmet signed by Bart Starr.

I can't really remember spending a ton of money on any autographs in recent times. I'd guess it was in the $200 range for a newer card, like a 1/1 or something, before the market softened on those types of cards.

I've been pretty lucky to land some great items before prices got too crazy and I have steered away from the big ticket items too. Lots of middle of the road buys for sure though.

Some seriously sweet autographs there. I have a Hodges for my 69 Mets collection and a Maris for my 61 Yankees on 3x5s. Still need a Clemente for my 71 Pirates tho.
