What type of flat item do you prefer to get signed?

Post by coachk28 on Wed Feb 29, 2012 9:27 am

Everyone has their own stance and reason as to why they collect certain things. With so many different options out there in the collecting world, it's always neat to see how someone else puts their own personal touch on the hobby.

When it comes to collect autographs on flat items... there are a wide variety of choices.

What type of flat item do you prefer to get signed? And why? Discuss your opinions here!

Trading cards: My dad had all his old Topps Cubs cards signed when he was younger in the 60's and 70's. Many of them were signed in pen and/or pencil then tapped or pinned to his bedroom wall or school locker. Since some of them aren't in the best shape, I am now trying to get updated replacements... finding unsigned cards in better condition and having them signed in blue sharpie.

8x10s & 11x14s: I like 8x10s & 11x14s because they don't take up a lot of room. I have a lot of other big premium items (jerseys, posters, bats, etc) that will take up a lot of wall space when they finally get displayed in my office or man cave. So these smaller flats are the way to go for me.

I usually do 8X10's at MM shows even though all I had was cards when I first started. Sometimes I still do cards at MM shows depending on the player and the set.

Index cards are strictly for TTM'ing. Mostly cards for TTM though. I usually use index cards when I don't have a card of somebody I want.

I selected cards, 8x10 and other.

I like to get vintage cards signed. Also I believe 8x10 are easier to store in a file cabinet. The reason I chose other is because I like to get things signed by a player that was around when they played. Foe example: SI Mags, Sports Mags, Time and Life Mags, Ticket stubs and programs.

16x20's are the primary item for me (I like multi-signed stuff to display), but 11x14's and 8x10's as well can be found.

I used to say that I'd never collect flats...until I started working on the '53 Archives set and now I love it...I have a few IC's in my "Flats" collection...mostly from my Basketball HOF Project...and I have a few larger posters...few 8x10s, etc. In general, I really don't like 8x10's...just cards, IC's and larger items like 16x20's..

More towards 11's and 16's now then 8x10's. They frame up so much nicer than 8's.

Re: What type of flat item do you prefer to get signed?

Post by Guest on Tue Mar 05, 2013 12:02 pm

I have gone through so many phases in this hobby that I FINALLY realize what I want to collect. I'm very much into the game used items of Chicago professional teams, but in regards to flats, it break down like for me:

8x10s - Photofile only to frame with a jersey. Will look for a significant photo of the player in the same color of the jersey being framed.

11x14s, 16x20s - If I have them with me to get signed, its for my wife's bar. Will almost always try to get it personalized to the bar. It's rare that I get them for my personal collection since I don't have the room unless of course it's a cool multi-signable project to work on.

Photofile Photoramics - Love these things! Wish they would come out with more Chicago themed ones like an 85 Bears defense one. Their championship ones make great multi signed pieces.

Posters - Love the older Chicago sports posters from my childhood. Have kept quite a few and gotten them signed and have been shopping for ones I'd love to have and get signed. Have recently started getting current posters signed....simply because I have nothing to get signed by some of these guys (Soxfest 2013....I had nothing really to get signed so I just bought posters).

I also collect actors/actresses and will collect them on movie posters. I have a passion for comic book/superhero movies and try to work on their teaser posters (27x40). If not, for other movies I like, I will try to get an 11x17 mini movie poster to get signed.

Magazines - I specifically collect any ESPN, Sports Illustrated, Kids Sports Illustrated, Sportings News or Hockey News magazine with a Chicago athlete on the cover and try to get them signed. Sans mailing label of course! Have a lot of ones signed and framed.

For actors/actresses/models, if I don't have a movie poster, I try to get a magazine done. Playboys, Maxim, GQ, Esquire, Stuff, FHM (I have boxes of from years of subscriptions) or Cigar Aficianados.

As far as non flats, I focus on signed ROMLBs, NFL mini helmets and officiall or autograph style logo pucks. Also collect Chicago athlete McFarlanes and try to get them signed as well. I will also get jersey cut numbers signed. If the eventually become "jersey worthy", I'll get the jersey made up for framing.

Everything is else is game used or game issue for me....love that ish.

Thanks, but that's not my intentions. I was collecting aimlessly for too long, basically hoarding. The recent boundaries I created for myself help me not go overboard and focus on what I can display in regards to my collection.

Trading cards: My primary collection consists of trading cards. I always found them easy to transport to/from a venue and most athletes don't frown on signing them.

Photos: I try to collect a variety of images of players (HOFer/All Stars) whom I know will sign. Many go into my "man cave" and I try to create unique pieces with them when I display them.

Others: Some of the items in this category include jerseys, mini/FS helmets, mini/FS bases, bats, and balls. These items are usually reserved for "more desired" athletes like HOFers, All Stars, Cy Youngs, MVPs, and batting/HR champions. I also have several HOF themed items like bats, helmets, and balls.

Flats I like 11x14's and programs. I will step up to 16x20's for particular images though.

I think I might like doing programs more than photos even though my photos outnumber the programs 10:1

I loved getting jerseys signed as a huge NBA fan, but now I realize my parents are kind of tired of spending a lot of money on framing them. Im a big 11x14 and over type of guy now. I love the images to fill my otherwise desolate walls, and their cheap and easy to frame.
