Who was the greatest IN PERSON autograph you've obtained??

Post by Stallion0122 on Thu Feb 23, 2012 6:42 pm

I would say it's a tie between Michael Jordan and Muhammad Ali.

Jordan was at the right place and the right time. I got Jordan in 1996 on the Bulls championship run. People can claim he never signs but he did for me and a few others. He orginally told me no about a basketball but when I told him he can personalize it to me he did it anyways. He just told all of us that we couldnt take any pictures of him signing. I did snap some shots after though which he was cool with.

Ali was at the 2002 National Convention. He sold out super fast. I bought tickets on the first day and it was expensive but worth it. He had alot of handlers and people telling him what to do. But I couldn't complain since he had health issues and it is Muhammad Ali.

You know I'll have to make it a 3-way tie with Hulk Hogan. I got lucky enough to know one of the Hulkster's friends. I got to go to his house in Florida, obtain many autographs and photographs. Not only that I got ringside seats for Wrestlemania 18 for Hogan vs The Rock. The night before Wrestlemania I got to go out to dinner with him, signed a wrestling belt and a photo with the police protection from other wwe fans.

Greatest, as in experience, or as in the magnitude of the player signing?

I'd say my best experiences were:

Meeting Steve Garvey in person for the first and only time in 2001.

Meeting Bob Feller at a Pacific Trading Cards store signing around 1984.

Meeting Dave Stewart at a minor league signing event. He was friendly and talkative, took the time to check out some of the odd items I brought (I even gave him one of the Dodger Police cards he seemed especially curious about) and at one time asked me why I didn't give him my whole stack of cards to sign (Because the people behind me may not have appreciated waiting).

Best IP players not at a planned event or signing:

Carl Yastrzemski, Eddie Murray and Dave Winfield, all at the Kingdome during batting practice, in the 80s.

Special Mention: I met Shawn Hillegas at a Home Base improvement warehouse around 1996. I was working there at the time and he came in to buy some items. I didn't recognize him per se, but when he paid for his purchase with a check, I recognized the name. We chatter briefly about him playing for the Dodgers and he promised to sign some cards the next time he was in, which he did a few weeks later. You never know where you'll run into someone...

Gabby Hartnett died a long time ago. 1972 I think. You are up there.

That's true, Hartnett died at the age of 72 in 1972 but Piccolo died even longer ago in 1970 at the age of 26. It was indeed an honor to meet them both and get their autographs. As you can see at 53 I am indeed up there.

Deacon Jones- Really nice guy who asked me about my 49ers Jersey and then talked a bit about Mike Singletary. Really friendly guy.

Drew Brees- the info above him said he threw for 55069 yards in 2008. I said man dude you were amazing almost breaking Marino's career passing record in one season. He looke perplexed until I pointed out the info. He looked at it, looked at me, then smiled and rotated his arm. He then yeah that was a great season. He then inscribed and signed my item and shook my hand.

Ernie Banks- He was dancing and singing while he signed. He was just a fun guy to be around.

I have many more but too many to list.

Best auto in person if referring to what they signed would be:
Carlton Fisk- 1976 W.S. Gm 6 GW HR STAY FAIR! STAY FAIR!
Barry Sanders- The Lion King, 1 Corinthians 13
Emmitt Smith- All Time Rushing Leader 18,355 yds, ATRTD Leader 164
Nolan Ryan- Don't Mess With Texas, 5714 Strikeouts, The Ryan Express, 7 No Hitters
John Elway-Comback Kid
Case Keenum- Whose House? Coogs House!, Go Coogs!, Isiah 40:31
Eddie Murray (3000 hit bat)- STEADY EDDIE
Pete Rose (3000 hit bat)- he dotted the I's on big stick hahaha
Ray Lewis- Psalms 52 (I am probably the only one with a Bible inscription by him lol)
Arian Foster- NAMASTE (he got excited when I asked for this inscription)

Hands down...the women of the AAGPBL. With the history they made and how little remain alive from the their league, it was a definite joy and experience to be part of their reunion in San Diego last summer. Below are photos from the event (which only cost $20) and included a Q&A with the audience, showing of the movie A League of Their Own, and an autograph session with approx. 40 members.

If we are talking about greatest experience and not most famous...I'd go with Bobby Richardson...was EXTREMELY nice to me and my dad before a signing...sat and talked with us for 30+ minutes, signed balls, talked about his family and playing days...was an amazing guy. Got a chance to see him a few months later and he signed a couple of the photos that we took of him with me and my dad.

When the lockout was happening one of the meetings was at a hotel near me, so I went and scored Dawkins, Patrick Willis, and Robbie Gould on footballs. Dawkins was super nice and stopped dinner to sign for me and my friend
