Using Ebay To Determine Value?

Post by coachk28 on Sun Nov 17, 2013 11:04 am

When assessing the value of your autographs and memorabilia, do you use prices on EBay to determine the value of your items?

Its hard to use one auction results to determine the price but if you look over 3 months at the results, I think you get a fair value of what people are willing to pay.  Certain events over the course of a year can cause the value of your item to increase..., eg baseball items go for more during baseball season, values rise when a player does something spectacular or dies, anniversary of events, etc.

If I'm selling something on a sports site, I'll typically use eBay to determine what I'm going to list my item for.

Kind of like items listed in may be a good starting value but, I don't rely on it because you can always find items for cheaper online...and value should really be determined by its market value and what people are willing to pay.

I use ebay to get at least a ballpark idea. If I'm selling stuff I'll refer there quick to get a starting average and see if people are even bidding on it.

ebay is good to gauge what something normally goes for, but also lets you get an idea of how saturated the market is.

Just yesterday I was trying to figure out about how much I should ask for a signed handwritten note by Earl Averill. I literally had no idea how to even ballpark it. So I went on ebay to gtet an idea. So yes, I use ebay to get an idea.

I do but go to complete listings to see an average of what they actually sold for. I never take in account BIN unless they sold. Complete listings give you that idea.

Looking for Vintage Baseball cards, Vintage baseball memorbilia, Baseball Autos (All HOFers and Future HOFers), Star Wars vintage fugures and Autographs, Star Trek Autographs, Hollywood autographs and memorbilia.

Like Dad always said, its only worth what someone is willing to pay for it.  Ebay is a great place to do that.  But there are different types of info you can look at.  The "long sell", big time dealer with a ebay store that is willing to wait for the one in a million that will pay max price, or the "short sell", as what price you will get a solid amount of interest from normal users. Trends and timing, whats hot, whats not. You used to have to go out and find your "market" and now the internet brings the market to you....but it also brings ALL your competitors to the same potential buyer. Good for collectors, bad for dealers. lol.
