HOF Inscirptions

Post by Bluemoon4655 on Sun Mar 03, 2013 3:59 pm

So I kind of have a question here. Is it smart to get a great current player to inscribe H.O.F. on an Item even if they are a current player and have yet to be inducted. Say I get Dirk Nowitzki's or Dwayne Wade's autographs, would it then be wise to ask them to inscribe H.O.F. even though they aren't in yet, they are sure-fire first rounders to make the Hall? Have you guys ever done this before where you have asked for an H.O.F. inscription even though the player wasn't in yet, but was likely to? Im just curious if this adds value to the item.
-Thanks

I have not but I doubt many would. If it were a HOF item they would probably sign but I doubt they would inscribe HOF as they usually include year inducted but it never hurts to ask. I always ask for odd or never seen before inscriptions to have something unique and different.

I view it an inappropriate. It is an honor they are yet to have earned.

At one of the old Mike Ditka autograph shows that was at Forest View HS, Mike Webster of the Steelers was a guest. I think he may have just retired after finishing his career with Kansas City.
He is a member of the NFL 75th anniversary team. While he was signing my book, I asked him to add HOF under his signature and he told me that he had yet to be enshrined. I told him that I knew he was going to be inducted into the Hall and he signed H.O.F. under his signature.

Years later, I had him add his HOF year and he remembered signing my book and you could see how proud he was that someone thought of him as a hall of famer, before his election.

I had Richard Dent sign a HOF piece that I have, years before he was elected. He was reluctant but finally signed the piece. He told me that if he made the HOF he would add that inscription free to his signature. He added HOF the weekend of his induction and told his agent that there would be no autograph ticket needed for him to add the inscription.
He also remembered his promise to sign it for free.

I guess it depends on the piece and individual.

I know people who added Brian Urlacher to their Bears HOF pieces, I believe there is no right or wrong to asking, it's just a matter of being certain that they will get in when it comes to multi signed pieces. When it comes to to single signed, just adding HOF just seems to cause problems for the future because such as the talents of Wade and Nowitzki, they most certainly have to be paid signings to get inscriptions, and we all know the "No inscriptions to previously signed items" rule.

Some guys will add "HOF Class" etc prior to getting inducted.

whats the point in getting a "HOF" inscription when you don't know what year the player is being inducted? If I don't have the year on there, I don't want "HOF" on it...just my opinion...

ON a similar note though...if I was working on a HOF project and I had existing HOF'ers already on it...I may would add players to it like Griffey, Thomas, Maddux, Glavine, Biggio, etc who are almost guaranteed to make it...but thats a bit different from what you were asking.

I think it would be ok to ask but it would be up to the players to decide wether or not that they do it. You could never tell they might just thank you with a real jem of a story.

I read an interview with Thomas and he has a huge respect for the game and for the HOF...I think he doesn't like signing them because he's not a member yet.

Re: HOF Inscirptions

I've had players refuse to sign HOF items (when not inducted yet)...I have never tried to have them add the inscription...they may be a sure thing but as SILLY posted before me...the player has not (officially) earned the title.

I remember getting Jerry Rice, Thurman Thomas, and Dermontti Dawson on my HOF helmet shortly after they retired and each was reluctant to do so. They eventually did but it was tough. Even Gwynn (I live in San Diego) was reluctant to sign HOF items (or even 3000 hits) before he achieved the milestone. As Gwynn put it one time..."I don't want to put the cart before the horse".

Honestly, MLB Hall of Fame voting is the biggest joke, Who are sports writers who have never played a day in their lives to determine who gets get the game's greatest honor?

agree with carney and think that it should be players ranging from old to newly retired.

I agree with Carney but if the players vote...how do think the HOF would be impacted with players going in under the current HGH/PED controversy. It's an interesting debate for another day but would some of the current HOFers break the locker room code of silence if it remained "unreported"...interesting to think about.

IMO, asking someone not in the HOF to add the inscription is like someone wearing the Medal of Honor without being awarded it. I'm happy with getting someones stats inscribed. It's a big risk with multi-signed items, because a HOFer could see the non-HOFer on the item and get offended.
