In-Person (IP) Autographing Discussion

Post by coachk28 on Wed Dec 14, 2011 10:39 pm

Since we have a couple threads dedicated to TTM graphing. I thought I would start one for In-Person (IP) autograph collecting.

Do you go to public signings, big sports autograph conventions, or hunt players down at games or practice?

Discuss everything that is in person autographing... your successes, failures, tips, experiences, etc. here!!!

I had just typed a nice long story... then closed the page on accident and lost it. So I will add it later.

Here are some pics from my most favorite IP experience which occurred this passed Veteran's Day.

my additions 12/16/2011

Post by Silly on Sat Dec 17, 2011 11:29 am

This mornings update is actually going to be from last night. I was too tired to get on here and post an update. I will have another update late this afternoon as well when I go meet Reggie Phillips from the '85 Bears.

I didn't really have anything going on after work so I figured I would take the ride to go meet Fuzzy Zoeller. I will be honest, I know nothing about golf but figured why the heck not.

While I was at Fuzzy a friend of mine was at Steve McMichael and Kevin Butler. I had given him an extra copy of a super bowl xx program so he had both of them sign it and Otis Wilson the day before. So that is a nice extra piece I have now.

Fuzzy didn't seem to thrilled I brought in an outside item to get signed, I think he was only planning on signing the Vodka bottle so I did not take pictures of him signing the photo, I kinda figured that I should give him his space lol.

Regardless I am happy with what I have. Not sure what I will do with this bottle but nevertheless it is a neat lookin bottle.

I dont have my items back from the McMichael and Butler so I will only post the pics of them signing the program that my friend texted me.

This last item was a gift from the nanny who watches my kids. She knew I wanted to go to this signing but due to scheduling I was not able to. She did attend with her father however.

Here are the pictures that were mentioned above. The only thing I think I don't have a pic of at this time is the Lattner because I haven't gotten it back from my buddy who took it to get signed. I will get that either later today or tomorrow and will post it up. He told me it turned out horrible and that J in Johnny lokos bad so I might not even keep it.

The Phillips mini helmet I had asked him for some sort of inscription about his INT return for a TD in the super bowl. I told him I couldnt figure out the right way to word it. He signed the mini and gave it back to me with his total amount of tackles in the super bowl. He said he had the most tackles in the game and no one knows that so that is why he wrote it. It isn't what I asked for but I will take it. It is certainly something different.

This program is the extra one I had. I don't intend on spending money on these signatures, so far everyone has been free. The program itself its in rough shape so that is why I consider it an extra piece. Maybe I will donate it after a few more signatures.

This poster is interesting to say the least. I got it free from a friend and it already had Richard Dent on it. So far from all research we can do we have found this poster unsigned for sale for $250 and $300. Still not quite sure I believe it is worth that much.

Re: In-Person (IP) Autographing Discussion

Post by Silly on Wed Dec 21, 2011 10:30 pm

I went and met Fergie Jenkins tonight at a local mall. Richard Dent was also there signing for a steep fee. I only took 1 pic of Dent because to be honest I kind of felt like a creep just taking pictures.

So when I get to the mall I was walking into the store where the signings were at and notice Fergie walking out. I must have had a confused look on my face because someone came up to me right away and said he would be right back. About 15-20 minutes later Fergie came back with a GNC bag. He said he had to go get his vitamins. I had my Cubs board along with the $20 donation for JDRF in my hand.

Fergie called me over and asked me if I wanted my item signed. I told him I did and that I was amazed by 1 particular item he had on his table. It was a Fergie Jenkins Way Street Sign that is about 3-4' long. He had signed it along with HOF in the middle but from left to right it had 15 other inscriptions besides the HOF. He told me if I liked it so much I should buy it. Fergie said $75 and immediately knew I would be leaving with the item. I countered with $75 for the street sign and the additional signature and HOF inscription on my cubs board. Keep in mind this is going 100% to JDRF. The two guys who were with Fergie at the table kept telling him $10 plus the $20 for the Board. I simply told them that I liked Fergie's price much better. After all it was the last 2 hours of them being at the store for a week straight. I am sure they wanted to get rid of stuff.

Thanks!

He was super nice. Chatted a bit and showed us his rings.

He was the second front office guy to show up. Krane Kenny was first... But we didn't want him for obvious reasons.

Todays Tony Esposito and Mike Ditka Adventure

Post by coachk28 on Thu Dec 29, 2011 8:17 pm

Todays Tony Esposito and Mike Ditka Adventure

My plan today was to get in person graphs from Chicago Blackhawk HOF goalie Tony Esposito and HOF Chicago Bear Mike Ditka. Both were down town... Tony O at The Winter Wonderland Fest & Indoor Ice Skating Rink and Ditka was doing his last radio show of the football season.

Tony Esposito was scheduled to appear from 3:00-4:30. So I figured if I get there early enough and can be first in line... I could get outta there in time to make it to Ditka's Restaurant to get a graph or two from him during his 5:00-6:00 show.

I arrived at Navy Pier Winter Wonderland Fest before 12:00... a good 3 hours early to make sure I was first in line.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

This place was a mad house!!! Thousands of families with screaming kids! Tons of rides and attractions as well as the Blackhawks sponsored indoor ice skating rink.

None of the employees knew what was going on in regards to the Esposito signing. And there was nothing set up to tip off where he was going to be stationed at. So I just walked around and enjoyed people watching! Some dude fell while he was skating on the rink and had to be taken off on a stretcher... it was hilarious!

I started to see a couple of regular graph hunters show up around 2:00. As it go closer to 3:00 they started setting up where Esposito was going to sign... and sure enough I wasn't near it at the time... so about 50 people just walked right up in line. So much for being first.

Tony showed up a little late... as he was coming from the Blackhawks blood drive. If you've never gotten a graph from Esposito before... he is the sweetest guy! Always dressed in a mafia-esque suit, super polite and talkative, and always gives an amazing autograph.

When it was my turn, he saw my picture of him, Mikita, and Hull singing the 7th Inning Stretch at a Cubs game in Wrigley Field. He loved the picture and started to tell the story of what happened... how Bobby was drunk off wine and sang "Take Me Out To The Ball Game" waaaaaayyyy to fast.

You can see the video here....

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

You can hear Esposito at the end say, "Bobby you sang it too fast!" Which is what he wrote on my picture! He saw that I had an extra picture and asked if he could have it. So of course I gave it to him... how could I say no!!!

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

*** Sorry for the bad pics! As you can see the lighting in that place wasn't all that great!

I couldn't have been more happy with how the 11x14 signed photo turned out!

Unfortunately... by the time I got done... it was going to be too late to get a shot at getting Mike Ditka at his restaurant. Which isn't too big of a deal... he is always around!

It's been a pleasure sharing with you guys!!!

Got a couple more in-person autographs today!

Like 90% of the in-person graphs I have gotten over the past couple of years.... both of these aren't even for me!

I drove about 45 minutes in each direction to get two Dave Bolland (Chicago Blackhawks) autographs.

The first autograph is of Dave Bolland on a multi-signed Chicago Blackhawks jersey. There is about a dozen or so players on it so far... B. Hull, Savard, Pillote, Gadsby are some of the highlights.

The jersey will be donated to the Make-A-Wish Foundation Illinois Chapter for them to use as they wish... either for a charity event prize or to give out as part of a wish.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

The next item is an 8x10 of Bolland and several other Blackhawks celebrating a goal being scored. This signed photo will be given to my students as a prize for good attendance and/or grades. I had him sign it "Stay In School!"

The next item is an 8x10 of Bolland and several other Blackhawks celebrating a goal being scored. This signed photo will be given to my students as a prize for good attendance and/or grades. I had him sign it "Stay In School!"
